Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral known as silicon carbide ($SiC$). Discovered in a meteor crater, it is often called the gemstone “born from the stars”. Today, because natural moissanite is incredibly scarce, nearly all of it used in jewelry is created in the laboratories.
The story of moissanite begins in the stars. In 1893, Nobel Prize-winning chemist Dr. Henri Moissan discovered microscopic particles of a new mineral in a meteor crater in Arizona. Initially, he believed he had found diamonds, but scientific analysis revealed a breathtaking new structure: Silicon Carbide.
Natural moissanite is one of the rarest minerals on Earth—so rare that there isn't enough of it in nature to create a single pair of earrings. For over a century, this "Stardust" mineral remained a scientific marvel, hidden away in laboratories and private collections.
It wasn't until the late 1990s that scientists mastered the complex process of thermal synthesis. By replicating the intense heat and pressure of the cosmos within a controlled laboratory environment, we were finally able to grow large, jewelry-grade crystals.
